Hand-eye coordination is vital for both fielding and batting in baseball. If you can watch the flight of the ball and move your bat at exactly the right time, you’ll have a chance of hitting a home run every time. Coordination is something that can be worked on, and it’s always a good idea to try and hone your skills whether you’re in the middle of the season, or you’re enjoying a well-earned rest. Here are 3 simple coordination drills you can do at home to get ready to hit the opposition out of the park.

Wall-ball Fielding

Wall-ball fielding is a very simple drill you can do at home on your own. All you need, as you may have guessed from the name, is a wall and a ball. This exercise is designed to improve your coordination and get you ready for a season in the field. Start with a simple drill that involves throwing the ball against the wall and catching it. Then move to a slightly more advanced exercise using a single hand to catch the ball. Switch hands on a regular basis. To make the drill more challenging, you can place targets on the wall and try and hit them before catching the ball. This drill is easy, but it’s hugely effective. It will improve your catching skills and your hand-eye coordination, at the same time as increasing your speed and agility.

Ball Drops

If you’ve got a ball and a yard, you can do ball drops all day, every day. To do this drill, all you need to do is drop the ball and try and catch it before it bounces. You can try to catch it before it hits the ground or before it bounces for a second time. To excel in this drill, you need to be able to focus and to watch the ball very closely and carefully to judge the pace and the trajectory. This will stand you in good stead when you’re facing the pitcher.

Juggling

You may not need to juggle if you’re sporting custom baseball uniforms out on the field rather than entertaining crowds dressed up as a circus clown, but this is an incredibly beneficial transferable skill for baseball players. Juggling is all about mastering the art of hand-eye coordination, but it also helps to improve your focus and to concentrate on what’s going on in both your direct line of vision and your peripheral vision. If you’ve never juggled before, you might be surprised at just how difficult it is to keep three or four balls flying in the air at any given time. When you juggle, your eyes should be focused on the highest point of the ball’s trajectory. While the balls are moving, your brain makes decisions about what to do with each ball and this determines the placement and positioning of your hands.

There are few things that are more important than hand-eye coordination in baseball. If you’re looking to hone your skills to improve your batting or fielding, try these fun drills at home.
