Baseball Drills You Can Practice at Home
To truly become good at something, you have to work for it. You have to be willing to put the hours in, to make a special effort to push your raw talent into something truly remarkable. As the saying goes; the harder you practice, the luckier you get.
That quote may have been in reference to golf, but it’s fitting for every sport, including baseball. Hours of dedication are required to build an ability that can succeed, which means that any wannabe MLB player is going to have to build on their skills outside of their designated practice sessions.
In an effort to help you get the most out of your home practice, the drills below should help you hone your skills in the best way possible.
Drill #1: Work On Your Sprinting
Baseball players need explosive power when sprinting; they need to be able to accelerate quickly to reach each base. To help hone this, you need to practice running full speed from a standing position. Here’s how to do it:
- Find an open area to practice in; a park or playing field is perfect, though you can use your backyard if it’s large enough.
- Take a swing as you would during a game; you don’t need to hit a ball, just mimic the movement.
- Immediately start sprinting;
- Stop when you reach full speed.
If you do this repeatedly, your reaction time will begin to increase, and you’ll reach your top speed in less time. This is invaluable when it comes to game situations.

Drill #2: Rebound Catching
Catching is a vital skill for baseball players, but it can be tricky to practice without a partner. If you don’t have any friends or family available to throw to you, then use a wall to practice this craft.
- Stand roughly 10 feet from the wall;
- Throw a baseball at the wall, not aiming for anywhere in particular;
- Catch it before it hits the ground.
This drill requires you to vary your initial throws. Some should be hard; others should be incredibly soft, to the point you have to dive to catch the ball. This will test your reflexes and your ability to react when the ball comes from different directions.
Drill #3: Practice Your Swing
The easiest baseball drill to practice at home is your swing. You can do this swinging practice at home, provided the area around you is clear of obstacles.
- Pick up your baseball bat;
- Swing as if hitting a ball.
- Repeat this ideally 100 times per day.
This drill helps to build up the muscles you need for an effective swing, which will in turn improve the strength with which you can hit the ball while playing. It’s a fairly easy drill, too; if your living room is large enough, you can even do it while watching TV-- but keep a firm grip on the bat! Mom and Dad might not be happy if they find their flat-screen turned into a smashed-screen;)
The ideas above should help you to improve your skills and increase your ability when at the plate or in the field. Repeat the above at least three times per week -- and more for swinging practice -- for the best results.
