Volleyball Drills for All Ages
Volleyball is a game that requires hand-eye coordination, balance, and technique. The younger one can start playing the game and honing the requisite skills, the better one will be in high school or college. The good news is there are simple drills that you can use in order to improve your skills and your game.
One drill that is great for beginners is the toss and pass drill. This drill is great for teaching a player the proper technique to pass theĀ volleyball. This drill requires one player to toss the ball to a second player and the second player then passes it to the first. This is repeated for a set number of times and then the two players switch roles.
Another drill that a beginner can do to sharpen hitting skills is wall hitting. This drill does not require a second person and can be done anywhere there is wall. The player simply focuses on a spot on the wall and tries to hit that spot. This drill helps the players develop proper arm swing technique when hitting the ball.
One more drill for beginners that they will actually like is the dead fish game. To do this drill, you split the team in to two groups, one goes to serve and the other goes across the net and lays down on the floor. The objective is for the serving team to hit someone who is lying on the floor. The serving team gets a point for each ball that lands in, two points for balls that hit a player on the floor, and lose a point for serves in the net or that are out of bounds. After a set amount of time, the two teams switch roles. This drill works on keeping the serve in bounds and locating it to different spots on the floor.
A more advanced drill that works on four basic skills in volleyball is three-man pass, set, spike, and dig. You have two groups of three on floor, one on each side of the net. Each player is designated a particular responsibility. One team serves, the designated passer receives the serve and passes to the setter, the setter sets the hitter for a spike, the hitter spikes the ball, and the designated digger on the other team digs and passes to his/her setter. Once the ball is returned over the net, the receiving team rotates. This drill works basic skills and keeps the players focused on what their assignments are on the floor.
These drills are great for teaching the fundamental principles of the game. The drills are engaging, fun, and designed to reap rapid improvement in a player's skill set.
